This island rarely gets hurricanes – too close to the equator for the necessary Coriolis force to spin them up. Nevertheless, the new phone book that was delivered last week had two pages of public service announcements, including those about hurricane safety. Several of the warnings were the familiar ones we see here at home, like “have 3 days worth of bottled water and canned food;” “make sure you have spare batteries for radio and flashlight.” Hint #7, though, reminded me that we aren't in Maryland: “make sure to remove all coconuts from trees near the house.”

Love it! I remember those watch for falling coconuts signs in Hawaii. That would hurt, at the least!
